How images are handled

Every image is used under a licence read from its source's own metadata, not asserted by this site. Images are stored and served from Vercel Blob; the link goes to the original file page.

No image is committed to this site’s repository. Files are uploaded once to object storage and referenced by key, so a picture can be replaced without editing an article and the repository stays text. That is not only tidiness: a binary committed to git is permanent, and the version of this site that preceded this one carries 24 MB of images in its history that can never be removed from it.

Licences are read from the source’s own API and matched against a list of terms compatible with this site’s CC BY-SA 4.0 text. Anything reported as NonCommercial, NoDerivatives, or carrying additional restrictions is refused by the tooling rather than judged by an editor. A licence is the one claim on this site that a reader cannot check by following a footnote, which is why no person is allowed to type one.
